Looking back, looking forward
Any serious jazz pianist has an extreme curiosity to deepen the history of his instrument, exploring the various periods and styles, trying to combine everything by leaving it to his taste, the ultimate judge of the final result of this leap in the dark, an always vigilant and present ‘superego’.
Solo Piano is always a special challenge, with a posture and a responsibility that are completely different from those you have within a group, whether small or large: for a pianist, playing alone is the starting point and the point of arrival: you are eager to create music with other instrumentalists, but you inevitably return, sooner or later, to try your hand at solo playing to make a personal synthesis in black and white.
We hope it’s no heresy to say that, along the very rich path of Jazz Piano, a single thread can be discerned. The instrument has the extension and potentiality of an orchestra and can contain the summa of the various phases and the many influences that have come to enrich its heritage.
Its path is full of prairies, but also of bends and jolts. We look back, we recover fragments of history and stories, we underline details that impressed us, we pay a real tribute to the musical giants that came before us. Then we go ahead to look at the present and at the immediate future.
